Lid

Clay lid from Salut (IMTO archive)

Salut, ST1, main ditch (US89)
Muscat, Office of the Adviser to HM the Sultan for Cultural Affairs
Clay; D 18.5, T 0.7
Bronze Age: 2400-2000 BC

These two fragments likely belong to the same round lid; it is the only one found so far at ST1, and finds very little parallel on other southeast Arabia sites (more concave but unpainted lids are known from Umm an-Nar island, for example). Slightly concave in section, it has a central knob of which only remains the trace of the bottom. As well as the shape, extremely peculiar is the decoration, which comprises a series of concentric circles realized using two different paints, a black one and a dark red one. (MdE)
